The Edge of Heaven

"Cities do not hide when it rains." – Joseph Brodsky

(Rotterdam Journal 1973)

A city's surface area minus its streets, squares, and waterways equals its rooftops. The haphazard ways rooftops take shape: unruly, organically appearing, almost by chance, shifting form with every vantage, have always fascinated me. Unseen landscapes made of clay, straw, stone, tin, and pebbles, crowned with antennas and chimneys. Having evolved over decades, sometimes even centuries, accumulating, changing, ageing, often unnoticed, to become what they are: labyrinth-like patchworks of protection, forming the outer skin of the cocoons in which we live our lives. And sometimes we linger up there, on a terrace where the skies stop being distant, a shared little ‘Edge of Heaven’. This ongoing project is an ode to these floating landscapes, as much the foundation of our urban lives as the city soil we stand on.
