Hi, I’m Karsten.
Growing up in Rotterdam, my father introduced me to the magic of photography through his self-made darkroom. I watched in awe as scenes from a recent trip – solidified in time – suddenly emerged from beneath the water.
A few years later - fantasizing about a career as a photographer - I sent a handwritten application letter to the Dutch School for Photography. Their swift reply kindly asked for my portfolio...which, of course, I didn’t have.
Instead, I set sail - literally - became a captain on the sailing tall ships, and spent years living a life full of adventures, following a path of inspiring professions. Surprisingly, it wasn’t until about ten years ago that I picked up a camera, and was instantly taken.
A natural inclination towards life's deeper essence flowed seamlessly into my photographic passion, revealing subtle beauty, hidden layers, aesthetics, and shapes.
After a severe burnout that led to early retirement, Portugal became my new home, where I now live a peaceful, slow-paced life on the Silver Coast - a stretch I had often sailed past.
Through my photography I hope to offer you some moments of reflection & calm in this fast-paced world. A quiet touch of beauty, reaching your 'mind’s eye' as it does mine.
Feel free to reach out at contact@karstenseven.com with any questions or ideas, and let’s see where the journey takes us.
Currently I shoot with Canon mirrorless R5ii, modern lenses, along with some cherished Canon & Leica vintage glass. Recently, I’ve also loaded my father’s old Minolta OM-10 with a fresh roll of film!
“Hear the silence!” is a phrase he sometimes said, one that has quietly stayed with me ever since.
Who knows, perhaps one day I’ll set up my own darkroom, and let the magic continue…
Best wishes, Karsten
